I never thought Id see the day. Since after the Marcos regime in the late 80's it seemed that we had a law of impunity in our country. Politicians, our Generals and Government Corporations reigned as tyrants amazing wealth at the expense of the Filipino people. It was fairly normal for us to see corrupt officials accused yet always managed to bribe their way out or bully their way out of justice. It seemed that our justice system was still very much stuck in the middle-ages.
It was not like this before. I still remember how my grandmother tell me stories of how the the Philippine government was once a model in Asia. The Senate and the Judiciary were ran by men of honor and dignity. Corruption was almost non existant and the soldiers and police were not feared but respected by the public. Our economy was the second largest in Asia. For some reason we had lost our way. For decades we continued on a downward spiral. Thus our country is labeled "The Sick man of Asia".
But a glimmer of hope seemed to be at hand. Recently the chief magistrate of the land was impeached for mis-declaring his assets and net worth. Currently he is under scrutiny from the BIR for tax evasion charges. Top brass Generals are now currently imprison for amassing wealth by using the tax payers money for their own gains. Our former president is incarcerated for betrayal of public trust and for electoral sabotage. This time I think major changes are taking shape in our country. The government is slowly gaining the publics trust once again. The economy is starting to pick-up. Our last GDP growth was 6.4% the second highest in Asia next to China.
There is an old saying "Di Papasok ang Suwerte sa Maduming Bahay"(Luck does not enter a dirty home). This is really fitting our countries situation. I hope that the current administration continue on their drive to finally rid our government of corrupt officials so us the regular "Juans" and "Maria" will finally get the Justice overdue from these parasites who prey on us.
